By Christine A. Smyczynski     A sure sign of spring is the swallows returning to San Juan, Capistrano in southern California. This annual event has been happening every St. Joseph’s Day, March 15th, as long as anyone can remember. Hundreds of years ago, the priests that ran the San Juan Mission back in the 18th Century noticed that the birds would arrive on that date like clockwork.     The San Juan, Capistrano Mission, built between 1776-1806, was one of 21 missions constructed in California.…See More

Feeding birds peanuts

While folks in Europe have been feeding peanuts to the birds for years, this is a relatively new concept in our country.Plain roasted peanuts, with no added salt or sugar, are better for birds, just as they are better for humans. As a matter fact, salted nuts should not be fed to any wild animal. While some birds have the ability to shell whole…See More

Well, it took a couple days. I got Bluejays and the chickadees inside my living room. I am on the 3rd floor and have a decent sized balcony. I have feeders out there on the railings. I knew the love that those 2 types have for peanuts. So I started with some at the front of the sliding glass door. Then I made a trail into the apt, all the way across the living room. The bluejays came in first and took the closest peanut and flew out the door w/it. The chickadees would come in when the bluejays were not around. Well, they both ended up getting confused about the window on their way out, so I had to grab them with a towel. I got them calm while holding them and then I would kinda talk to them and admire them. Then I let them go outside. They all came back for more, so there must not have been too much trauma to them. It was so fun!
