Bird Feeder Friends

I work in a nursery and was passing a row of cherry trees when a beautiful bird flew out of one. I was with a customer so I could not get too close but the tip of her tail feathers were yellow and she had a tuft like a cardinal on top. The color from what I could see was light brown. When I got home I tried to look it up and only came across the Cedar Waxwing. The only thing is that I have seen them before and this bird looked bigger and I do not seem to recall the mask associated with the waxwings. Any ideas? I am guessing it was a female because I figure they are nesting now but when I got back to the tree there was no nest.

cedar waxwing sounds correct per your description (the yellow tail tip is diagnostic). they are fruit eaters so the habitat would fit as well. or perhaps you have seen a bohemeian waxwing. less likely, because of range, but not out of the question. another possibility is that you may have seen a juvenile bird. they have blurry streaks on the plummage and differ in appearance from the adults.

good birding,

i would agree, Cedar waxwing sounds just right:
